I am not your Dusky Maiden is a multidisciplinary performance piece in which wāhine/women have been asked to come up with a response to the term “I am not your Dusky Maiden”.
The sensational body or the storyteller and the witness co-exist in a simultaneous continuous exchange of encounter and meaning that reinforces our sense of ‘self’ and identity in real and imaginary ways.

JUANITA HEPI & BYLLIE-JEAN ZETA
Juanita Hepi - Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Wai, Moriori, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāpuhi is a multidisciplinary storyteller exploring the intersections of race, class and gender through indigenous storytelling and cross-cultural collaborations. She has performed on stages across Aotearoa; The Court Theatre, Auckland Theatre Company, Bats and Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Juanita holds a Masters of Māori and Indigenous Leadership with Distinction, a Graduate Diploma of teaching and Learning and a Bachelor of Arts from Toi Whakaari, the NZ Drama School.
She is a constant advocate for the arts and artists in Ōtautahi because this is the place her ancestors have battled, made love and settled for centuries.
Byllie-Jean - Ngāti Kere, Ngāti Rangikoianake is a street soul artist, writer and co-creator who uses sounds and words to weave the stories of people-water-dreams-blood-earth and memory with obese baselines, glitter synth, grit and raw voice. Byllie-Jean is a mother of 3 (who’ve mostly flown the coop) and is passionate about showcasing Māori women in music.
She is lead singer with The Byllie-Jean Project and a graduate of Ara Institute of Canterbury Music Arts where she now teaches their lyric writing course.
